Our History
Founded in 1985 by father-and-son duo Buzz and Eric Nicholls, Spiral Construction began crafting concrete spiral staircases from a small factory in Cornwall.
As the years went on, the company built a reputation for high-quality spiral staircase construction, growing into new staircase types and a wider range of materials and finishes.
Looking ahead, we’ve taken a further step to secure that legacy: transitioning to an Employee Ownership Trust, reinforcing our long-term vision and commitment to our people.
We now operate from premises in Helston, Cornwall, and St Ives, Cambridgeshire. With a highly skilled team of over 40 people, we combine the latest technology with design flair and craftsmanship to create stunning staircases for some of the country’s most prestigious buildings.

1985
Spiral Construction is formed
Buzz and Eric Nicholls set up Spiral Construction Ltd out of a small workshop in St Keverne, Cornwall. Made up of three staff members, they specialise in concrete structures and turn over £50,000 a year.
2002
Spiral Construction expands
Growing popularity leads the company to set up new premises in Helston, Cornwall.
2012
The factory extends
Our Helston factory site expands, alongside a widening range of materials - glass, wood, steel, and metal.
2015
Spiral UK is born
Spiral Construction Ltd is rebranded to reflect its nationwide status, becoming Spiral UK Ltd.
2026
Today...
We employ a staff base of 35 across Helston and St Ives, Cambridgeshire, turning over £3.5 million a year. Having entered our 40th year of trading in 2025, we now enter a new phase through our transition to an Employee Ownership Trust.
