Modern, Classic and Versatile

Concrete is just one of the materials we can use to create your bespoke staircase here at Spiral UK, and doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, often being thought of as grey, cold and utilitarian. However, concrete is an incredibly versatile material with a lot going for it, and can be utilised to create myriad impressive effects.

What’s so great about concrete?

Concrete is a composite material, made up of cement, water and a variety of aggregates (mineral additions such as sand or crushed stone) which provide bulk and strength to the mix. There are examples of concrete-like materials dating back thousands of years, being used by the Romans to build large structures such as aqueducts, but the invention of the modern concrete we know today is credited to a British bricklayer named Joseph Aspdin in 1824. Joseph’s son William further developed the process in the 19th century and production of concrete has remained largely unchanged since then – and it is now the most manufactured material on earth.

What are the advantages of a concrete staircase?

Concrete is a highly durable material which will not wear or decompose, fade or warp, making it a fantastic option for commercial staircases which see heavy footfall. It is also fire resistant, strong, provides good sound-proofing, and is easy to keep clean, therefore providing an excellent choice for domestic settings. It is a great material for any type of staircase, from straight to spiral, helical and cantilever staircases, and always creates a classic and timeless look.

Other considerations

If you decide to opt for a concrete staircase, there are plenty of options for additional details and finishes. Bespoke treads can be made from concrete, and these lend themselves particularly well to our cantilevered, or floating staircases. The concrete can be finished with a smooth (fair face) or rough pebble dash (exposed aggregate) surface, and can also be colour matched to walls, flooring, or other specifications you may have. Here at Spiral UK, we can precast concrete treads in our factory, or pour on-site depending on the project, meaning that we have huge flexibility when it comes to customising your ideal staircase.

A concrete staircase has an elegant, understated beauty which can help to create a light and airy feel, especially when finished in bright white and combined with glass or polished steel. We have installed a great many concrete staircases over the years, and some have featured as case studies on our website. These serve as fantastic examples of the versatility and beauty of this wonderful material, so why not take a look at five of the best:
