Imaginative designs for straight staircases

One classic design idea is to create a single, straight flight of stairs.

If you are looking for a staircase to suit an understated interior style, they can be ideal. Or you can create visual drama through the use of interesting materials. Straight staircases are very adaptable in terms of the design ideas you can apply to them.

If there are less than 16 risers then there is no requirement for an intermediate landing. Straight staircases are the easiest type to construct and this is often reflected in lower costs.

An L-shaped or dog-leg stair is a straight staircase which includes a space to change direction with a 90° or 180° bend. This is usually at a landing halfway between floors. This can be a helpful staircase design idea where space is limited as it is more compact than a completely straight staircase.

A straight spine beam staircase has a long beam running underneath the centre of the staircase with treads on both sides. This can create an open airy feel. A spine beam staircase lends itself to modern interiors and is highly flexible in terms of the materials used.

Points to consider

Consideration needs to be given to the landing support, including whether you want the structure to be visible.

Straight staircases can take up more space than some other staircase design ideas.

Straight staircases do not create the same privacy barriers between floors as some other staircase designs.
