Ten of the Best Interior Spiral Staircases

Inspiration for your interior spiral staircase comes in many forms so we’ve brought together ten of the best examples we’ve created across the UK. Whether you’re looking for a space-saving solution or a knock-out entrance feature for your luxury home, as bespoke staircase manufacturers we can make whatever your heart desires.

Space-saving concrete

Open plan living spaces have become more and more popular, but how do you introduce a staircase without encroaching on the space? Simple, tuck a bespoke spiral stair into a corner for all the function of a straight stair but without taking up too much of your room. This beauty in a holiday let in Carbis Bay, Cornwall suits the subtle seaside theme and is an interior feature without distracting from that view. The light white faced concrete is suitably heavy in structure but light in form, with open risers and glass balustrade making this one of the best interior spiral staircases for a modern home.

Traditional Bespoke Timber

The history of the spiral staircase is long and winding… so they are well suited to traditional interiors, in particular church conversions. These tend to have open plan living areas and so a feature staircase that doesn’t cause ‘dead’ space underneath is required – a tightly coiled spiral ticks all the boxes. In this example, our steel spiral was clad in rich timber with ornate balustrading (crafted by bespoke joiners, Stuart Interiors) to offer strength and stability yet an aesthetic that suits the historic space, the warm tones enhanced by feature lighting.

Waterside Ways Up

In a leisure environment, you’re looking for clean, functional and effective, but what about all of that with a luxury touch? This concrete and glass creation was the perfect combination for our client’s interior spiral staircase needs. It’s sleek and stylish, the balustrade reflecting the water and sending light flickers across the white walls from the double height glazed wall alongside. Concrete is highly durable and requires little maintenance, plus (depending on the chosen finish) is not too slippery when wet.

Modern Matching

What better way to complement this new build than an interior spiral staircase that makes use of the materials used throughout the rest of your luxury home? This solid wrapped spiral continues the wall render around its sides to keep you safe and make a feature structure that sits back against its surroundings. The bamboo wood flooring continues seamlessly up the stair, both tread and riser, pulling the lower floor up to the first floor in style. At the top, the plaster balustrade meets neatly with a glass panel that keeps the views uninterrupted on the side of the living area, the curved plaster hiding the more domestic living areas behind.

Tucked Away Turns

A beautiful skeletal structure tucked neatly in a nook, the perfect ascension from this galley hallway to the upper living area without intruding on the narrow space – this discreet spiral was made in white faced concrete with open risers to let the light filter through the interior space. The material tones beautifully with the tiled flooring and rough rendered walls, glass balustrading at the top maximising light and space.

Show-stopping Glass Spiral

If you want a showstopper interior spiral staircase without any of the light blocking qualities of normal stairs, perhaps an almost entirely glass stair would suffice? Here the strength is in the steel core pole with cantilevered steel brackets supporting toughened glass treads and fixing into the glass balustrade, capped with a stainless steel handrail for comfort. There are also glass risers to stop feet slipping through. The finished stair looks delicate and ethereal, particularly when lit from above, yet is fully compliant for your safety.

High-End Entrance

What an entrance – this barn conversion was of the highest quality, as seen in the bespoke nature of this particular interior spiral staircase which utilised Botticino Italian marble for the cantilevered treads. We also sourced the matching floor tiles from our partner company, Wachenfeld GMBH in Germany, to ensure a perfect match. The balustrade could only be glass to show off the stone in all its glory, with a tall dark core pole off-setting the steps.

Contemporary Corten

Corten steel is having its time in the spotlight with both interior and exterior design trends, its industrial yet tactile, strong yet soft aesthetic appealing for many applications, not least this helical interior spiral stair we created over in Jersey. The dark almost suede-looking metal contrasts the light wood treads and sits well in a modern traditional home, complimenting antiques as much as contemporary furnishings.

Contemporary Powder-coat

Contemporary style for a Cornish new build, this modern industrial aesthetic has been very popular recently. Here, the imposing structure cuts through all three floors in a wonderful corkscrew. The powder-coated core pole supports wooden, underlit treads, the softness of the timber sitting nicely in juxtaposition with the cool grey metal stringers and stainless steel handrail that sandwiches the shiny glass of the balustrade. Just look at the precision cut of the wood meeting metal – the perfect fit from bespoke manufacturing expertise.

Classy Concrete

Concrete – a heavy, flat construction material, right? So how is it this concrete spiral lifts you up through several storeys with such a light touch? The treads are pre-cast in our purpose-built factory with recessed treads to allow in-fill with the client’s chosen tiles on site. The narrow gauge balusters are inset into the side of the tread for a small but effective aesthetic detail and the matching handrail is not too heavy so as to upset the balance of this towering yet elegant interior spiral staircase. Definitely one our favourites
