Replacing a Spiral Staircase
Many people ask if it is possible to replace a spiral staircase with a new one and what is involved.
Why replace a spiral case?
Many existing spiral staircases don’t comply with current building regulations, and are often narrow and steep. Other staircases may have not been good quality to start with and have buckled or deteriorated. You may also just want to upgrade to one with a more modern stunning architectural look to make a real statement in your property.
What do you need to consider if changing spiral staircases?
To change one for a compliant equivalent there are a few factors to bear in mind. In terms of floor space, you need a minimum of 1900mm x 1650mm at both lower and upper floor levels if it is the main stair for a dwelling. For average residential heights, the stair will rotate about 270 degrees, three quarters of a circle, so you need to look at where the stair will start and finish. A new staircase may be heavier than the existing one, so you will need to check if the floor is adequate to support any increased weight. If in doubt ask an expert like us!
