Factory Open Day

A £600,000 office and factory extension for Cornwall-based Spiral Construction Ltd was
officially opened Friday March 11th by West Cornwall MP Andrew George.

The extension, at Spiral Construction’s headquarters in Helston, has been supported by more than £265,000 of ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) Convergence with the rest of the investment coming from the company itself. It will safeguard five existing jobs and create five more; support Spiral’s planned expansion into new products and markets and save the business money by making it more environmentally efficient.

Eric Nicholls, managing Director of Spiral Construction which is the UK’s leading manufacturer of spiral and helical staircases, said, “We are developing new products for the European market and have until now been working at capacity in our original buildings. This extension will help us meet the increased levels of competition in our sector, progress to the next level of sustainable growth and improve productivity and profitability.”

Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Convergence Partnership Office for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said, “This company has undergone planned and consolidated growth in challenging times and an ever unpredictable global economy. The ERDF Convergence investment in a high quality, environmentally sustainable build will mean Spiral can continue this growth and expand into further markets from a base that ‘walks the talk’ for sustainability and supports more efficient operations right here in Cornwall.”

Both the 6,300 square foot new build – which increases workspace by about one third, and the existing premises have now achieved BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) Excellent rating – the highest measure of environmental sustainability in industrial buildings.

Features include intelligent lighting, supplied by another Cornwall-based company Somar International Ltd, and a highly efficient heating, ventilation and cooling system.

Spiral was assisted by the Grant Services team at Bishop Fleming Chartered Accountants. Ewan McClymont, head of grant services, said: “Over the last 25 years, Spiral Construction has earned a reputation for quality and excellence. The extra capacity will enable the company to build on these attributes and stamp its environmental credentials into its operational processes.”

South West Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS-SW), which receives ERDF Convergence investment, also supported Spiral Construction with expert advice to improve factory throughput and efficiency.
